If you are bored rigid with the usual white grape winter round, tuck into this curious Midi wine made from the ancient picpoul grape by one of this appellation’s best producers, the Jourdan family. With picpoul vines now some 25 years old growing in red gravelly soil that dates back to the Jurassic period, the quality here is as good as it gets in Pinet. I loved its greeny-gold, floral, spicy, waxy, verdant fruit, reminiscent of apples and pears.

Als het om witte wijn gaat, wordt het assortiment dat ik ter beoordeling krijg aangeboden, nog steeds gedomineerd door twee prominente leden van de Grote Vijf, chardonnay en sauvignon blanc.

Vooral het assortiment in de supermarkt wordt grotendeels bepaald door dit duo dat zich - overigens met zeer wisselende resultaten - inmiddels in bijna elk wijnproducerend tot wit laat persen.

Wat een verademing is het dus af en toe eens iets anders onder de kurkentrekker te krijgen. Twee weken geleden liet ik bijvoorbeeld de loftrompet schallen over een Duitse riesling, een bij 'het grote publiek' nog ondergewaardeerde druif. En dan loopt het op het verkooppunt weliswaar niet zo storm als wanneer 'die twee' in de krant staan, maar aan de reacties te horen en te lezen smaakt het naar meer. ''Leuk, eens wat anders.'' ''Ik dacht dat riesling altijd mierzoet was.'' En: ''Na eerst maar eens flesje te hebben geprobeerd, ben ik de volgende dag meteen een doosje gaan halen.'' Verandering van wijn doet drinken, zo blijkt.

Vandaar dat ik ook deze week een tweetal witte wijnen in de schijnwerpers zet van druiven die het nog niet tot wereldmerk hebben geschopt. Zo kreeg ik een uitstekende Picpoul de Pinet 2005 van Domaine de Félines op de proeftafel. Dat is spannend wit uit de Languedoc van een van de beste domeinen binnen deze appellation.

Het domein heeft overigens wel sauvignon blanc en chardonnay aangeplant staan, maar het meest werken ze er met een oude lokale held die helemaal in ere is hersteld, de picpoul druif. En daar maken ze een werkelijk verrukkelijke, onalledaagse witte wijn mee. Geurend naar anijs, venkel, grapefruit en citrus. En met een wat mollige smaak zonder wee te worden, waarin ik exotisch fruit, zachte bitters en stevige, maar toch fijne zuren proef.

Zo'n Picpoul is een fantastische aperitiefwijn, die ik dan ook steeds meer bij de betere restaurants op de kaart zie verschijnen. Te meer omdat hij perfect door te drinken is bij bijvoorbeeld de thans zo populaire kabeljauw. En ook bij een simpele vissoep of een beter gevulde bouillabaisse is een Picpoul de Pinet de aangewezen partij.

Ik dronk trouwens laatst ook een prima exemplaar bij restaurant l'Entrecôte et les Dames, toen ik daar sliptongetjes bestelde.

One of the named crus of Coteaux du Languedoc producing white wine exclusively from Picpoul Blanc grapes. This curious speciality in the deep south of France, one of the country's few varietally named AC wines, has in the post-modern age of vinification attracted some new interest. Millions of tourists each summer see the well-signposted co-operative (see co-operatives) at Pinet, the mostimportant producer of this distinctive wine and clearly visible from the main autoroute along the Mediterranean coast. The co-operative at Pomerols and some individual domaines such as Félines Jourdan have usually managed to coax a more interesting green-gold, lemon-flavoured wine out of the grape than this particular production centre, however."

Toujours d’une bonne maturité, d’un bon volume de bouche, avec une longueur sans notes amères, cette cuvée dépasse le cadre gastronomique des huîtres et appelle les rougets à la tapenade.

Au-delà des qualités du picpoul (vivacité et fruit), on se félicitera de la capacité de ce vin de ne pas abdiquer devant le sucre de l’échalote et le goût du persil. Plein, intense, il ne renie pas ses origines méridionales (citron confit, abricot, notes grillées, menthe), mais on se situe loin d’une caricature facile, grâce à l’acidité. On se surprendra à multiplier les prétextes pour célébrer ce vin friand.

Sur un terroir de grès rouges qui regarde l’étang de Thau, la famille Jourdan élève chaque année un picpoul très typé. Jaune clair, il affiche une grande élégance grâce à ses parfums d’agrumes, de poire et de fleurs blanches. D’une belle vivacité au palais, il devrait s’épanouir et faire merveille avec les produits de la mer. Le rosé Coteaux du Languedoc 2001 a également obtenu une étoile.

…notre coup de cœur pour ce vin issu du plus important producteur en cave particulière qui s’affirme chaque année comme une des valeurs sûres de l’appellation. Un palais frais et acidulé mais sans agressivité, une finale exotique et longue sur une note citron vert. Il est parfait.

...The Jourdans aspire to a fruitier style than some other growers: a Picpoul with more gras which will match food other than shellfish. Sometimes the wine has a hint of pears and even butter, suggesting a Languedoc equivalnt to a good Côtes de Gascogne...Of the vins de pays, the Syrah/Grenache blend called “Les Romarins”, a gusty wine with just enough tannins to balance it, is to be preferred to the 100% Grenache.

There is also a curiosity, a Muscat, made from late-picked grapes and given a discreet oaking – an exotic wine, ...but turns out as a worthy rival to similar styles from the more prestigious sources.

…Relativement jeune, le vignoble de piquepoul est en partie situé sur un secteur avantageux de sables et de graves qui contribue à un vin particulièrement complet, ne sacrifiant à aucun artifice expressif. Le 2001 apparaît ainsi bien en matière et structuré par l’effet minéral. Si son goût miellé situe le parti pris de la maturité, une note d’astringence (pamplemousse) active opportunément l’équilibre acide. Encore en élevage, le 2002 séduit par un fruit de prime jeunesse et par l’agréable délié d’une bouche charnue.

Picpoul de Pinet 2000 (une étoile)

Voici un très joli Picpoul de Pinet qui affirme bien son origine. Sa robe est claire à reflets d’or. Au nez, des notes fruitées côtoient des arômes de fleurs blanches et de miel. L’équilibre en bouche marie l’ampleur à l’arête acide caractéristique du terroir. Le gras en finale suggère que les raisins ont été cueillis bien mûrs.

I also enjoyed her Vin de Pays d’Oc, a blend of Syrah and Grenache, with a nose reminiscent of the scents of the garrigue and a full spicy palate, making a much more original wine than a varietal Vin de Pays d’Oc. Even more intriguing was a late harvest Muscat, picked at a potential 16°,which was fermented and aged in wood for nine or ten months. It had an intriguing bitter orange taste, with firm finish.....

De leukste ontdekking die ik de laatste maanden heb gedaan is deze wijn : Domaine Félines Jourdan. Het is een Coteaux du Languedoc en gemaakt van de oude, nauwelijks bekende Picpoul. Inmiddels heb ik de twee dames die deze kostelijke, ragfijne wijn maken, heel eventjes in Den Haag gesproken, al waar zij tijdens een korte tussenstop te gast waren bij wijnkoperij De Gouden Ton op de Denneweg....

Proefnotitie: Geurt naar gegrillde amandelen. En heeft een intens florale neus. Een volle, mollige wijn, met een perfecte zuurgraad die hem geschikt maakt voor veel gerechten waar citroen of, in dit geval, sinaasappel, in is verwerkt.
